Trumbull—Erin Welch was recently named Miss Shamrock 2017 for the Greater Bridgeport St Patrick’s Day Parade. Contestants were evaluated based on numerous essays on Irish history, culture and tradition and were interviewed by a panel of judges. Mr. and Miss Shamrock as well as their runner-ups will receive a college scholarship, perform a reading at the St Patrick’s Day Mass, participate in ceremonies throughout the day and ride on the float in the parade.
Erin is a senior at St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.She is a member of the State Student Advisory Council on Education and represents St. Joe’s on the Trumbull Business Education Initiative Board. She is also a member of the International Thespian Honor Society and has played a variety of roles in theatrical and musical productions of the St. Joe’s Drama Club.
Erin is a semi-finalist for the Connecticut Governor’s Scholar Award and is a recipient of the Harvard Book Award. She has earned the AP Scholar with Honor distinction and belongs to the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, English Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Erin was one of several St. Joe’s students who participated in the 12- day pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Poland with Pope Francis last summer. She has been president of the St. Joe’s Irish Club for the past two years. Erin also volunteers with the Special Olympics golf program and is a Trumbull United Top Soccer buddy.
Marisa Doyle ’17 (runner up of 2017 Miss Shamrock) of Shelton serves as a local youth advocate locally and globally with a focus on children. She has been part of the last three St. Joe’s immersion trips. She is also a youth leader for the Valley United Way, 4H Teen Ambassador/ Washington DC Delegate, co-founder of St.Joseph High School RAAAFT (Raising Awareness Against Abuse for Teens) in conjunction with the Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport. She is also the founder of the Communion Closet at St. Joseph Parish in Shelton.
