Immaculate High School Musical Wins Top Halo Awards

DANBURY—Immaculate High School’s Spring Musical Fiddler on the Roof, produced and performed by IHS’ award-winning Fine Arts Department, won three Halo Awards, including the esteemed Best Classical Musical award. The Halo awards are presented by Seven Angels Theatre and are the most prestigious high school theater awards event in the State.

The IHS production also took top honors in the Best Dancing and the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Classical Musical categories. Senior Logan Monaco (of Ridgefield) earned the award for his strong singing voice and authentic portrayal of Tevye. Additionally, junior Jillian Fredette (of Brookfield) received a Dance Molinari dance scholarship based on the director’s nomination and in part for her performance of Chava’s Dance/Chavaleh Sequence.

IHS received the honors at the 14th Annual Halo Awards, which celebrates the best in Connecticut High School Theatre, on Tuesday, May 30 at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. This year 64 schools participated in the two nights of awards that highlighted the top high school drama and musical productions and performances. The Red Carpet event for nominated students was the icing on the cake for the the dozens of students who participated in the IHS production of Fiddler on the Roof, which ran from April 27-29 at Immaculate High School. All together, IHS was nominated for 14 Halo awards—twelve for Fiddler on the Roof and two for its Fall Drama Hamlet for Best Performance by a Leading Actor and Best Performance for a Feature Actor.

The production was directed by Matthew Farina and produced by alumna Aislinn Gavin ‘07, with musical direction by IHS Choral Director Samantha Murtha ’07. A cast and production crew of over 60 students plus an army of parents put together outstanding costumes and set designs to create the village of Anatevka, the setting of the story. IHS students designed the posters and playbook and parents helped create the elaborate lobby design.

Past IHS plays and musicals have been so successful that they have been nominated repeatedly and in multiple categories by the Seven Angels Theater Halo Awards; last year’s production of Oklahoma! received 12 award nominations and the 2015 IHS production of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar received twelve Halo award nominations and won in three categories: Best Original Program Cover Design or Artwork by Isabelle Camillo ’16, Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play, Logan Monaco ’17 for Brutus; and Best Classical Play.
