Staff Accountant
Catholic Charities of Fairfield County, located in Shelton, CT, is seeking a full-time, detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for a variety of financial, operational, and administrative functions that support the organization’s fiscal integrity and compliance.
The successful candidate will manage revenue recording, account reconciliations, grant reporting support, tax declarations, audit preparation, and financial reporting activities. This position requires strong analytical skills, excellent organizational abilities, and a commitment to accuracy while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Record program revenue for multiple agency programs, including Senior Nutrition Meals on Wheels and Congregate Programs, Room To Grow Preschool, Immigration Services, Clinic Revenue, and Bethlehem House rents.
• Perform regular bank reconciliations and promptly investigate and resolve reconciling items.
• Prepare and record sweep-entry transactions.
• Record monthly in-kind journal entries for donated goods and services.
• Ensure proper deferred revenue recognition in accordance with accounting standards.
• Allocate bank card and merchant services fees based on collected revenue.
• Reconcile Family Loan accounts monthly.
• Reconcile corporate credit card accounts, collect supporting receipts, and code expenses within the AvidXchange Accounts Payable system.
• Assist with monthly grant expense uploads to Amplifund, the organization’s grant management platform.
Reporting & Compliance:
• Prepare annual personal property tax declarations for multiple municipalities.
• Assist with annual census reporting and quarterly Department of Labor reporting requirements.
• Support annual audit preparation by compiling schedules, gathering documentation, and responding to auditor requests.
• Help ensure compliance with accounting standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies.
Organizational Support:
• Attend at least one annual fundraising event in support of the organization’s mission and development goals.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support agency operations.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
• Experience in nonprofit accounting is a plus.
Skills & Competencies:
• Advanced proficiency in Office 365, particularly Excel.
• Experience working with financial systems, cloud-based applications, and general office software.
• Ability to navigate multiple online platforms, generate reports, and analyze financial data.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
