BRIDGEPORT–When Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the decision to end the DACA program, Bishop Frank Caggiano responded, “The Lord Jesus was very explicit in his call for disciples to welcome any brother or sister in need: “Whoever welcomes one of these children in my name, welcomes me.” (Mark 9:37).”
Catholic Charities sees this as a time for action, said Al Barber, President and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Bridgeport.
DACA (Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals)is not “dead”. Grants of DACA not yet expired are still valid. Those whose DACA expires between 9/5/2017 and 3/5/2018 have until 10/5/2017 to file renewal applications that can get them two more years of protection from deportation and work authorization.
“Help us to help them,” said Barber. “Our Bishop, who is the son of immigrant parents, wants us to “find a way to allow these dreamers to remain with us in a manner that conforms to the laws of our nation.”
“Catholic Charities knows that many of these young people will lack the time or ability to aggregate the money needed to file their renewal application. We are asking you for a donation (https://www.ccfairfield.org/donate) to support our DACA Services through our Dreamers Fund. Monies collected will provide partial “scholarships” toward the cost of the renewal applications ($495) and also subsidize our Catholic Charities Immigration services,” he said.
