About St. John Fisher Seminary
St. John Fisher Seminary is an initiative of the Diocese of Bridgeport to prepare college-aged men and young adults for entrance into major seminary and eventual ordination to the Catholic priesthood. Founded in 1989 by Most Rev. Edward M. Egan, the third Bishop of Bridgeport, the St. John Fisher Seminary program exists to provide young men with a place in which they can come to a deeper relationship with Christ Jesus as they discern whether He is calling them to His priesthood.
Through a community life rooted in prayer and study the residents of St. John Fisher Seminary seek to grow in their baptismal call to be disciples of the Lord Jesus and men faithful to the Catholic Church that He founded in the midst of a culture in need of re-evangelization.
The residents of St. John Fisher Seminary who are pursuing an undergraduate degree enroll in a normal schedule of classes with a major in philosophy. Those who enter St. John Fisher Seminary having already earned an undergraduate degree take a certificate program with an emphasis in philosophy. A solid foundation in philosophy has long been considered a vital aid to the study of theology. For this reason the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops require that a man who is in formation for the Catholic priesthood achieve 30 semester credit hours of philosophical studies, among other academic requirements, as a precondition for beginning graduate studies in theology.
Most of the courses that the seminarians at St. John Fisher Seminary take are offered through Sacred Heart University. In some cases the student will study at Fairfield University. Depending on the course, the seminarians will either travel to the main campuses in Fairfield or attend classes offered on the seminary campus. St. John Fisher Seminary enjoys accreditation by the State of Connecticut.
Admission to St. John Fisher Seminary is granted to those who are admitted to the priestly formation program of the Diocese of Bridgeport, subject to the decision of the Bishop of Bridgeport.
