Students’ nickels add up to heartfelt generosity

BROOKFIELD—on June 16, Peter Brady, the “Boss Man” of Handy Dandy Handyman Ministry (HDHM) was honored by the first-grade class at St. Joseph School, Brookfield, with a check donation to the ministry’s many causes. The group began in 1999, when Brady got an inspiration while attending Sunday Mass at St. Joseph’s.

Starting with a Rake ‘n’ Bake with a handful of volunteers, the ministry has been helping Danbury area residents with everything from raking leaves to home makeovers, with specific responses as the needs of the elderly or disabled are made known to them.

For this school year, the students at St. Joseph’s saved all their plastic empty bottles and recycled them, saving the nickels for the ministry. “The check for $207 was presented to me after Mass by these two young beautiful children, which blew me away,” said Brady. “God is good, and so are the first-grade children at SJS.”
