Tony Melendez in Stratford on April 10

STRATFORD—Tony Melendez, the internationally known singer, songwriter, and author, will perform at a special Palm Sunday concert at 2 pm at Holy Name of Jesus in Stratford. The concert is free and open to the public.

A thalidomide baby, Tony was born without arms. His mother had been prescribed the drug, thalidomide, which was in use in the late 1950s and 1960s to help calm morning sickness during pregnancy. He was brought to the Los Angeles area from Nicaragua to be fitted with artificial arms. He wore them until he was ten, when he disposed of them. “I didn’t feel comfortable,” he explains, “I could use my feet so much more.”

Tony shot to stardom in 1987 when he was invited to play for Pope Saint John Paul II in Los Angeles. Following his performance, the Holy Father jumped down off the stage to embrace Tony and kiss the feet he used to make such beautiful music for the crowd. People are amazed not only by Tony’s ability to play the guitar with his feet, but by his songs – in English and Spanish – which move the faithful to prayer.

Today, Tony travels the globe as an award-winning musician who headlines concerts, conferences, retreats, and school presentations. Wherever he goes, Tony generates hope, and a commitment to help bring people’s hearts toward Jesus Christ. Knowing how important life is Tony Melendez strongly believes in justice and living with dignity.

Mark the beginning of Holy Week and bring your family and friends to Holy Name of Jesus, 1950 Barnum Ave. in Stratford at 2 pm on April 10 for a concert you are not likely to forget.
