Veterans Day Events Raise Funds for the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation

WILTON—In honor of Veterans Day 2017, Our Lady of Fatima School-Wilton carried on its tradition of observance and appreciation to veterans by holding two special events.

On Saturday, November 11th, the Home School Association held its 3rd annual International Family Night. This highly anticipated event encouraged school families to prepare their favorite dishes representative of their respective nationalities. A bountiful buffet was served by family members, with some wearing their ancestral country’s national colors or traditional dress. This year’s event featured culinary creations from 20 countries including Brazil, China, Colombia, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.S.A. All attending veterans were honored and welcomed to the event free of charge. The Home School Association donated the $1,000 event admission proceeds to the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation to support the organization’s goal of providing college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty.

In addition to this successful social & fundraising event, a special school Veterans Day assembly was held on Friday, November 10th. The assembly featured parent veterans Caroline Feeney and Noel McGuiness who spoke about their experiences in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Army National Guard respectively. The assembly also included a musical salute to the services featuring the Middle School chorus performing a medley of armed forces service songs.

Principal Stanley Steele shared “The support of the Fatima parent community enabled us to offer a successful family event that benefited veterans and educated our students on the sacrifices made by those who serve. We are also grateful to our parent veteran speakers for their service and willingness to share their personal experiences. Our Lady of Fatima places great emphasis on “Service Above Self” to develop strong character. Service projects, educational opportunities and community events like our Veterans Day activities are important initiatives that allow us to reinforce this message.”
