Bishop Frank J. Caggiano

Early Life and Education

Frank Caggiano was born in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn on Easter Sunday, March 29, 1959, to Arnaldo and Gennarina Caggiano, who had immigrated from the Italian province of Salerno just a year earlier. The Caggiano family were parishioners at Sts. Simon and Jude Parish, where he and his older sister, Antonia, also attended grammar school.

Bishop Caggiano continued his education at Regis High School, a Jesuit school in Manhattan. After graduating in 1977, he enrolled at Yale University as a political science major. However, following further discernment, he transferred to Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception in January 1978. He went on to graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in June 1981.

Path to the Priesthood

After graduating from Cathedral College, the Bishop worked for 18 months as the sales representative for the Gregg Division of McGraw Hill Publishing Company, serving the entire New York metropolitan area. At the end of this brief period of secular employment, the bishop began his major seminary studies at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, New York. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 16, 1987, in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, Queens.

In 1991, Caggiano went to Rome to reside at the Pontifical North American College while studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He received a Doctor of Sacred Theology in May 1996.

Pastoral and Teaching Ministry

After returning to the United States, Bishop spent several years working in Brooklyn in pastoral roles at multiple parishes, diaconate formation, and as a theology professor at Saint John's University and at Saint Joseph's College. In 2002 Bishop Thomas Daily named Caggiano as director of the Permanent Diaconate Office. Caggiano was raised to the rank of papal chaplain by Pope John Paul II in 2003. In 2004, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio appointed Caggiano as vicar for evangelization and pastoral life.

On June 6, 2006, Caggiano was appointed as an auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn and titular bishop of Inis Cathaig by Pope Benedict XVI. He received his episcopal consecration on August 22, 2006.

A noted catechist, Bishop Caggiano was invited by Pope Benedict XVI to deliver World Youth Day talks in Sydney in 2008, Madrid in 2011, and by Pope Francis to serve as a catechist at World Youth Day in Rio
de Janeiro, 2013. In 2016, he led a delegation of almost 300 young people to World Youth Day in Krakow, where he served as a catechist. Bishop most recently attended World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2023 and led a catechetical discussion on ecological stewardship.

Bishop of Bridgeport

On July 31, 2013, Pope Francis appointed Caggiano as bishop of Bridgeport. He was installed on September 19, 2013 at St. Theresa Parish in Trumbull.

On February 22, 2014, he formally convoked the Fourth Synod of the Diocese of Bridgeport, the first in 32 years, as an opportunity for renewal and pastoral planning. After a series of listening sessions with over 4,000 comments by laity, priests and religious across the diocese, the Bishop announced the Synod 2014 themes of empowering youth, building up the community of faith, fostering evangelical outreach, and promoting works of charity and justice. More than 8,000 faithful turned out for the Synod Closing Mass Celebration at Webster Bank Arena on September 19, 2015.

Diocesan Renewal and Initiatives

Bishop Caggiano’s efforts in the Diocese of Bridgeport have manifested in increased financial transparency in regards to diocesan operations, programming for the enrichment of Catholic life including initiatives like Foundations in Faith and the Face of Prayer, and the bolstering of Catholic Education in the diocese through Foundations in Education.

Most recently, Bishop Caggiano has called the faithful of the Diocese of Bridgeport to embark on The One—a bold invitation from the Holy Spirit to renew our local Church. The One represents Christ’s singular call to every believer: to encounter Him more deeply in mind, heart, and will through truth, beauty, and goodness.

With this vision, Bishop Caggiano is dedicating every aspect of diocesan and parish life to drawing individuals closer to God and revitalizing Catholic culture. At its heart, The One seeks to lead all the faithful to full, active, and conscious participation in the Eucharist—the most profound encounter with Christ and the richest source of strength in discipleship and evangelization.
