The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the sacrament that cleanses a person from original sin, making him/her a member of the Church and a child of God. Baptism imparts sanctifying grace, wiping away sin, and begins the process of salvation. The baptized soul is incorporated into Christ and receives the Holy Spirit.

Key Points on Baptism in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)

  • Baptism is necessary for salvation (CCC 1257)
  • It forgives all sin, including original sin (CCC 1263)
  • Baptism incorporates the baptized into the Church and makes them part of the Body of Christ (CCC 1271)
  • The grace received through Baptism is permanent, marking the soul as belonging to Christ (CCC 1272)
  • It is typically conferred by immersion or pouring on of water (CCC 1278)
