Kolbe hosts renowned sports writer at celebrity breakfast

Kolbe hosts renowned sports writer copy

FAIRFIELD—Well-known author and sports reporter Gene Wojciechowski, who covered major sporting events for more than 40 years with the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and ESPN, hosted Kolbe Cathedral Preparatory School’s eighth annual celebrity breakfast recently.

The Kolbe Conversations breakfast, which raised almost $25,000, was held at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, according to Richard Ryan, director of development.

Wojciechowski worked as a sports reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Dallas Morning News and Chicago Tribune, and later joined ESPN, where he was a writer and on-air features reporter on the network’s golf coverage, SportsCenter and College GameDay, Ryan said. He has covered almost every significant sporting event in the world, including nearly 75 golf majors.

Ryan said Wojciechowski gave the audience a recap of The Masters and PGA Championship, as well as a preview of the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.

A New York Times bestselling author, who has written or co-written 13 books, Wojciechowski gave attendees a copy of his latest book and fictional debut titled, “All Carry.”

The novel is about a recently laid-off golf reporter, a down-on-his-luck Tour caddie and a magical set of clubs once owned by Jack Nicklaus.

“It is a funny, feel-good, inside the ropes novel, as well as a touching father/son/unlikely friendship and comeback story,” Ryan said.

Sponsors of the event included the O’Herron Family Foundation, M&T Bank, Notre Dame of Easton Parish, Reckson and Trumbull Taiwan Associates.

Wojciechowski was introduced and interviewed by his long-time ESPN colleague and fellow author, Ivan Maisel, as well as 11-time Emmy winner Armen Keteyian.
