Mass for Deceased Clergy

BRIDGEPORT—Bishop Frank J. Caggiano will celebrate Mass to commemorate all those deceased priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Bridgeport on Saturday, November 5, 11 am at the Cathedral of Saint Augustine in Bridgeport.

Priests throughout the diocese are expected to gather for the Mass. The Mass is also open to the faithful who wish to attend.

Msgr. William Scheyd will deliver the homily and offer a brief testimonial recognizing the 25th anniversary of the death of the Most Rev. Walter W. Curtis, second Bishop of Bridgeport. Msgr. Scheyd, former Vicar General of the Diocese, was ordained by Bishop Curtis in 1965.

During this month of All Saints and All Souls observances, the Mass is an opportunity to pray for the repose of souls of deceased clergy and to offer our thanks for their lifetime of service.

After the homily, Bishop Caggiano will lead the Universal Prayer, “God, the Father Almighty, raised Jesus from the dead and He will give. Life to our own mortal bodies. We pray to him faith.” The priests will respond, “Lord, bring us to life in Christ.”

The bishop will conclude the prayer with these words, “Grant, Lord, we pray, that as our faith is built on the Risen Christ, so too ma our hope be steadfast, as we await the resurrection of your faithful from the dead. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord.”
