Celebrating a Journey of Learning and Faith

DANBURY – Practical and faith-filled advice was bestowed upon the graduates of Saint Peter School.

Twenty-two eighth grade students received their diplomas on June 15 at a commencement ceremony at St. Peter Church on Main Street just steps away from where many cherished memories and childhood friendships were made.

“I am proud of everything we have accomplished together,” said Salutatorian Danielle Smitherman as she welcomed her graduating class at the commencement ceremony. “I feel truly blessed.”

“We have learned many valuable lessons,” she said. “It’s been an incredible journey and I am grateful for every experience we have had together.”

Smitherman urged her classmates to go out and make a positive impact in the world.

“We can create a world full of hope and possibility,” she said.

As graduates received diplomas from their Principal Mary Lou Torre at the altar and congratulations from Pastor Fr. Gregg Mecca, they turned to have their photos taken by family and friends.

Those gathered at the church for the ceremony erupted in applause after all diplomas were handed out and the students moved the tassels on their graduation caps from right to left, officially signifying the end of one chapter in their educational journey and the beginning of the next.

Eighth grade teacher Suzanne Puglisi addressed the students and encouraged them to apply the many lessons they have learned thus far to the challenges that lie ahead.

“Life isn’t always fair, so rely on your faith that everything will turn out okay and move on,” she said.

She also encouraged the students to be aware of the world around them and get involved in their community.

“Grow your faith and keep learning as you go along in life. Learn something new every day. Pray every day,” she said, adding, “You will find joy in life when you are doing something that you were meant to do.”

Finding success, respecting everyone and being kind were also words of wisdom she offered the students as they get ready to embark on their high school careers and beyond.

“Your next journey will work out and you will succeed,” Puglisi said. “I wish only the best for you as your best is yet to come.”

Class Valedictorian Olivia Medeiros recounted special moments the class shared over the years and quoted Dr. Seuss as mixed emotions were evident on this most memorable day.
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Torre encouraged the students to develop healthy habits that will enhance their lives and to ask for help when they need it.

“You are all going off to high school where you will learn new things and make new friends,” she said. “Your time at Saint Peter’s School has given you a solid foundation.”

“You have a powerful shepherd in Jesus,” Torre told the students. “Live your life fully, with God as your pilot.”
