End of Year Gathering for DRE/CRE

BRIDGEPORT—The Office of Faith Formation will sponsor and End of the Year Gathering for Directors and Coordinators of Religious on Thursday, May 18, 8:30 am to 1:45 pm at the Catholic Center, 238 Jewett Avenue, Bridgeport.

“Connecting this Generation with the Eucharist as Source and Summit” is the topic of the workshop, which will feature speaker Kevin Dowd and a presentation on the New Pflaum Gospel Weeklies.

Kevin Dowd is a doctoral candidate in theology and education at Boston College, working under the advisement of Thomas H. Groome. He is the third of eight sons from Worcester, Mass. and has taught in Catholic schools in both Mass. and New York. After graduating from Harvard University with a bachelor of arts degree in history, Kevin volunteered for two years with the Capuchin Youth and Family Ministries center in Garrison, New York. He earned his masters in education from the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College in 2008. His research interests include religion and public education, inter-religious dialogue, and bullying in the schools.

Dowd’s “Front and Center” presentation draws on his experiences working with youth and college students to suggest that evangelization works best when DREs pay attention to this generation’s commitment to justice, service, equality, human rights and dignity. The program explores the link between good works and the Eucharist as opposed to simply a humanitarian approach.
